Three segments

The Commercial segment provides corporate lending, merchant and commercial bank card products, payment solutions, leasing and international services, along with business and government deposit, institutional brokerage and cash management services. The Retail Banking segment, previously called the Consumer segment, covers the retail branch network, consumer installment lending, personal mortgage banking and consumer debit and credit cards. The Wealth segment provides trust and estate planning, consumer brokerage, and advisory and discretionary investment portfolio management for personal and institutional customers. In 2025 the three segments contributed 48%, 28% and 24% of total segment pre-tax income.

Debt to equity here stands on the borrowing lines of Commerce Bancshares Inc.'s balance sheet, added together, finance leases inside them only where the company puts them there; operating leases are a separate line. Commerce Bancshares Inc. files on the bank format, which does not report a return on capital employed, an operating margin or interest cover, so those are left out here rather than shown as a blank. Free cash flow margin and cash conversion are left out too, by our choice: a bank's operating cash flow moves with its lending and deposits, so neither ratio means for a bank what it means for an operating company. Nothing here is a valuation or a view.

Read more* The fourth quarter is the full year less the first three quarters, because the company files the year and not the quarter on its own. A fourth quarter's EPS, and its diluted share count where shown, are from the company's results press release for that quarter, checked against the company's filed figures or a second data source. Money is in $ million as the company files it, or in $ billion by the switch above the tables; per share figures and the share count are as they are. Free cash flow is operating cash flow less capital expenditure; the effective tax rate is income tax over pre-tax income; margins are the line over revenue. Gross profit is revenue less cost of revenue, and operating income is revenue less the company's own total costs, where the statement does not print those lines. Cash flow lines filed year to date are the difference between two filings. Shares outstanding are at the period end where the balance sheet tags them, otherwise the count on the filing's cover page. A derived fourth-quarter EPS is left blank when a split in the year makes the arithmetic meaningless.

Cash flow and capital returned

Follow the cashA discounted cash flow: five years of free cash flow, added up in today's moneyNot for Commerce Bancshares: a bank's lending and deposits run through its operating cash flow, so its free cash flow swings with the balance sheet rather than with what the bank earns. Book value and return on equity, in the ratios above, are the usual measures for it.
