The year in brief

What management said about the year

Guidance figures: 3 new.

  • Revenue rose 24.5% sequentially: Net revenue was $1,006.3 million, up 24.5% from $808.4 million in the third quarter and up 109.3% from $480.7 million a year earlier.
  • GAAP net loss from debt extinguishment: GAAP net loss was $7.2 billion, or $84.65 per diluted share, driven by a one-time non-cash loss on debt extinguishment of $7.8 billion tied to convertible note equitization.
  • Components revenue up 21.8% sequentially: Components net revenue was $649.4 million, 64.5% of the quarter total, up 21.8% from the third quarter and 102.7% from a year earlier.
  • Non-GAAP operating margin reached 36.6%: Non-GAAP operating margin was 36.6%, up from 32.2% in the third quarter. GAAP operating margin was 27.8%, with income from operations of $279.3 million.
  • AI demand drives accelerating trajectory: Management attributes the faster trajectory to AI demand, which it says drives first-quarter revenue guidance.

From this 10-K

Lumentum makes optical and photonic products used in cloud, artificial intelligence and machine learning, telecommunications, consumer and industrial applications, and runs as a single reportable segment. It disaggregates revenue by type of product, which are Components and Systems. A component is one of the building blocks of a larger solution rather than a complete solution itself, covering semiconductor laser chips, laser sub-assemblies, line subsystems and wavelength management systems supplied to cloud data centre operators, artificial intelligence infrastructure providers and network equipment makers. A system is a stand-alone solution that delivers full functionality on its own, covering optical modules, optical circuit switches and industrial lasers such as short-pulse solid-state lasers and kilowatt-class fibre lasers. The company was incorporated in Delaware as a subsidiary of JDS Uniphase in February 2015 and spun off as an independent public company that August; its headquarters are in San Jose, California, with manufacturing in North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

What the products do

Its products carry high-capacity optical links for cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads and data centre interconnect, for service provider networks across access, metro, long-haul and submarine infrastructure, and for enterprise storage, local and wide area networks. The company attributes demand to the expansion of network capacity needed for cloud services, artificial intelligence processing, streaming video, video conferencing, wireless and mobile connectivity and the internet of things. Its industrial lasers are used for precision material processing in semiconductor and microelectronics fabrication, electric vehicle and battery production, metal cutting and welding and other advanced manufacturing.

The range

For data centres it sells high-speed optical transceivers and the components inside them, including laser transmitters, photonic integrated circuits, photodiodes and high-power light sources, and for data centre interconnect it offers both its own coherent pluggable transceivers and the ultra-narrow linewidth lasers and coherent components transceiver makers buy, alongside customised laser sources, compact arrays and packaging for co-packaged optics. In metro and long-haul networks it supplies coherent and direct-detect transmission components, modules and transport products, with tunable transceivers, transmitter modules and high-speed coherent components used in dense wavelength division multiplexing systems. Transport products include reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers, amplifiers and channel monitors for switching, routing and conditioning signals, plus pump lasers, switches, attenuators, wavelength-division multiplexing systems, integrated modules, circuit packs and subsystems, and optical circuit switches for data centres. Industrial lasers run from kilowatt-class fibre lasers for sheet metal processing to solid-state and ultrafast lasers for drilling printed circuit boards, wafer singulation, glass cutting and solar cell scribing, and the 3D sensing line is mainly vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and arrays.

The markets it reads

The company points to growing reliance on data transmission, rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and wider digitalisation driving expansion in cloud data centres and demand for higher-bandwidth networks. It notes that 5G deployment and bandwidth-heavy applications are accelerating capacity expansion, and that agile networks use wavelength-selective switches and tunable transmission products to adjust capacity remotely. In industrial lasers it points to fibre lasers overtaking gas lasers in sheet metal processing and welding on power, beam quality, efficiency and cost, and to miniaturisation pushing micromachining towards solid-state and ultrafast lasers in semiconductor, display, solar cell and battery production. In consumer markets, laser light sources sit inside 3D sensors in mobile devices, supporting biometric identification, computational photography, virtual and augmented reality and user interfaces. While positive on long-term prospects, the company acknowledges industry and market risks, including swings in supply and demand that have made its results volatile.

Customers, competition and people

In fiscal 2026 one customer accounted for 26.6% of net revenue and a second for 15.0%. Customers outside the United States, measured by where products are first shipped, were 79.2% of net revenue in fiscal 2026 against 81.0% in 2025, though revenue is mostly denominated in dollars and customers often ask for shipment to factories in countries other than their headquarters. Because delivery schedules can change, orders can be cancelled and sales often ship in the quarter they are received, backlog at any date is not necessarily indicative of revenue or orders for any later period. The company competes with public and private makers of photonic components, modules and systems, some of which are also its customers, and its quarterly revenue can move with customer demand patterns, new product introductions and the seasonality of consumer electronics. It uses various suppliers and contract manufacturers and aims for at least two sources of supply where possible, though certain components come from sole or limited sources. Since the spin-off it has bought Oclaro in 2018, NeoPhotonics and IPG Photonics' telecom transmission product lines in 2022 and Cloud Light in 2023. At 27 June 2026 it employed approximately 13,757 full-time people, approximately 11,916 in manufacturing, 1,085 in research and development and 756 in administration and selling, with approximately 1% covered by collective agreements in Slovenia and China.
