Fabrinet is a contract manufacturer for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of optical communication components, modules and sub-systems, industrial lasers, automotive components, medical devices and sensors. It provides optical packaging and precision optical, electro-mechanical and electronic manufacturing services, from process design and engineering through supply chain management, printed circuit board assembly, final assembly and testing. It was incorporated in the Cayman Islands in August 1999 and began operations in January 2000, and does its volume manufacturing in Thailand. The company states that in many cases it is the only outsourced manufacturer its customers use for the products it makes for them.

What it makes for customers

In optical communications it builds switching products such as reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs), optical amplifiers and modulators, along with tunable lasers, transceivers and transponders, and active optical cables that connect equipment inside data centers and computing clusters. It also makes solid state, diode-pumped, gas and fiber lasers used in semiconductor processing, DNA sequencing and other medical work, metrology and material processing such as cutting, marking and welding. Its sensors include differential pressure, micro-gyro and fuel sensors for cars and non-contact temperature sensors for the medical industry. It now reports its business in three categories: data center, communications infrastructure, and automotive, industrial and other markets.

Its own optics and glass

Fabrinet also designs and makes its own crystals, lenses, prisms, mirrors, laser components and substrates, and custom borosilicate, clear fused quartz and synthetic fused silica glass products, at facilities in Fuzhou, China and Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. It incorporates these into many of the products it manufactures for its OEM customers and also sells them in the merchant market. The range includes fiber optic ferrules and sleeves, precision glass tubing, laser crystals and optics, and optics for medical, storage, surveying and telecom uses. Its in-house processes include crystal growth, precision glass drawing, optical coating, fiber metallization and lensing, and a reliability laboratory for tests such as damp heat, thermal shock and vibration.

How it works with customers

It often runs a "factory-within-a-factory", physically separating some staff and floor space for one customer to protect that customer's intellectual property, and gives customers software to watch yields, inventory and work in progress in real time. New product introduction centers, Fabrinet West in Silicon Valley and Fabrinet Israel, help customers prepare designs for manufacturing and then move those programs to Thailand for volume production. Before volume production, many products go through qualification that can take three to six months or longer. Sales are typically made on individual purchase orders with short lead times. Its four largest customers in fiscal 2026 were Cisco Systems, NVIDIA, Nokia and Amazon.com.

Where it makes things

Its buildings and fixed assets are mainly at its Pinehurst and Chonburi campuses in Thailand. In February 2025 it began building a new manufacturing facility of about 2.0 million square feet at Chonburi, and during fiscal 2026 it invested in new manufacturing buildings at Chonburi and Pathum Thani. The company states that it expects to purchase a new manufacturing building in California.

People and structure

It has twelve subsidiaries, all wholly owned, and a Thai subsidiary provides manufacturing services to the parent. At June 26, 2026 it employed about 21,521 full-time staff in six countries, about 21,221 in Asia-Pacific and 300 in North America. About 21,020 worked in manufacturing operations and 501 in business development and administration. None are represented by a labor union.
